About Betty Halpern[]
Betty Halpern is an aid worker with the American Red Cross who leads a group of Korean children into the 4077th MASH seeking medical aid. She explains to Hawkeye and B.J. that the children are refugees whose village had been destroyed by artillery and she is leading them south to relocate. She tells the doctors that they had to hide in thorn bushes to avoid North Korean patrols and the children had all become badly scratched and so are in need of first aid. The doctors examine the children and decide that they all need to be inoculated against tetanus.
Later in the mess tent, while Betty is assisting the doctors with the inoculations, she tells them that she loves children. She has raised three children with her late husband and now the Korean children are like a second family to her.
The children are all becoming hyperactive and causing chaos in the tent. Father Mulcahy cannot control them and asks Betty if she can quieten them down as, after all, she speaks fluent Korean. She promptly gives a loud whistle and orders everyone to be quiet in English, which works instantly. Father Mulcahy is amazed that he couldn't do the same and comments that may be it is all in the delivery.
