Monster M*A*S*H

Brigadier General Hammond was the head of the Army Medical Forces in the Far East, Seoul sector in both the 1970 film M*A*S*H* and the CBS-TV series M*A*S*H. Though the character has a different first name in each incarnation, the character is played in both media by G. Wood.

In the film, General Charlie Hammond coordinates an intermural football game between the MASH surgeons and a team which he assembled of medics and surgeons that worked at a nearby evac hospital which was under his command.

In the Pilot episode of the TV series, Gen. Hamilton Hammond visits the 4077th with Colonel Blake (McLean Stevenson) to observe the command when he and Col. Blake happen to catch the surgeons throwing a party in the mess tent and offering the intimate favors of Lt. Dish in a raffle while there's a lull in the fighting action; he then threatens to court martial Hawkeye and Trapper until he observes and assists them in a long surgery strech when the wounded once again arrive.

Gen. Hammond would appear in two more episodes in the first season, To Market, to Market and Henry Please Come Home, which were the second and third episodes produced. He was then dropped from the series storyline altogether, beginning a long-standing M*A*S*H tradition of Generals who simply disappeared without comment or explanation.

The next general the M*A*S*H unit reported to, and presumably Hammond's military replacement, was General Wilson Spaulding Barker.
