Captain Berman was an army doctor who makes a one-time appearance in the Season 6 episode of M*A*S*H titled "Fade Out, Fade In". The part of Berman was played by Raymond Singer.
About Berman[]
Captain Berman is a battalion surgeon at battalion aid station which has been hit. Brought to the 4077th MASH along with other casualties, he tells Potter and Hawkeye during triage not to waste any time on him because of his severe injuries, including a fragment near the heart. He asks them to fetch a rabbi. Potter however tells him nobody in the MASh dies without his say-so.
The surgery on Berman does not resolve all the issues. Although Hawkeye repairs a lacerated ventricle, there remains a ventricular aneurysm. Berman thinks it is the end but Hawkeye tells him to rest first.
Later, while Potter is introducing the newly arrived Winchester to the other doctors, a nurse comes in to tell them Berman is going into cardiac arrest and can hardly breathe. The doctors rush to post-op but Winchester asks what the panic is. He tells them he has done over a dozen such cases. Winchester proceeds to demonstrate the technique to the others and successfully saves Berman. Everyone is impressed, but Winchester, characteristically, thinks it is nothing very special. When Berman, recovering in post-op after the surgery, tells Winchester that Hawkeye has said the technique is extraordinary, Winchester merely remarks, "To him, perhaps."
Just as Berman is about to ship out, he says his farewell to Hawkeye. Winchester, who has just discovered that he is permanently posted to the MASH, comes in and grumpily takes Hawkeye's clipboard and signs it off and then leaves without a word. Berman observes that Winchester seems a bit cold. Hawkeye agrees, saying he has great hands but no heart but Berman assures Hawkeye: "You'll soften him up."
