About Phillip G. Sherman[]
Sherman is a psychiatrist and friend of Margaret's who is normally stationed at the 423rd Evacuation Hospital. When Frank Burns (in temporary command of the 4077th) suspects that Hawkeye is faking insanity to gain a stint of R&R, he accepts Margaret's suggestion to summon Sherman to examine Hawkeye because "if anybody can spot a phony, he can."
Sherman arrives to interview Hawkeye and after a few days tells Henry Blake (who has returned) that he would like to transfer Hawkeye to Tokyo for a few weeks for observation. Henry is not pleased about this because he knows he may not get Hawkeye back. Nor is Hawkeye keen to go. So he and Trapper hatch an elaborate scheme to get rid of Sherman.
They ride on the fact that Sherman is attracted to Margaret. According to Margaret, he has been crazy about her for years. When he first met Margaret, he told her that he waited in a San Diego bar for her until 4 a.m. but she never came.
So, according to plan, Radar sits next to Sherman in the mess tent and hints to him that Margaret has a secret crush on him. Hawkeye and Trapper then switch the signs on the tents so that Sherman enters and settles down on the cot of Margaret's tent thinking that it is the VIP tent where he is supposed to spend the night. A while later, Sherman sees Margaret enter the tent and begin to undress. He thinks what Radar has told him must be true and he launches himself at her, forcing her into the bed. Margaret's screams summon the Swampmates and Henry. Sherman is embarrassed to be caught in the compromising situation and flees the camp, abandoning all plans to bring Hawkeye to Tokyo.
