Career[]

One of acting's more reliable performers from the 1970s through the early 1990s, Charles alternated between the live theater and film and television as both an actor and director. Born the eldest of four children in Kenosha. Wisconsin, he started his career following journalism school at Marquette University and a stint in the U.S. Army in the 1960s.

Charles began his career appearing in regional theatre productions throughout the United States during the 1960s with such companies as Shakespeare in the Park in New York City, the Lincoln Center Repertory Company, the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Connecticut, the Guthrie Theater, the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, Chicago's Goodman Theatre, and Baltimore's Center Stage. He spent seven summers at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and is a charter member of the American Conservatory Theater.

Although he still occasionally works as an actor, after Trapper John M.D.'s cancellation by CBS-TV in 1986, his career has focused on working as a director for episodic television for such shows as Xena: Warrior Princess, and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.
