About Colonel Griswald[]
Colonel Griswald is a tank commander with the 1st Cavalry Division. Early in the episode he turns up at the MASH to visit one of his men, Sergeant Moretti. Not very sincere, he can't even recognize his men and at first mouths a few platitudes to a patient but then finds out from Margaret that he said it to the wrong man.
After the short visit he takes Hawkeye aside and asks for a favor with "a delicate problem" that would not go down well if it showed up on his records. Hawkeye understands and gives him a penicillin injection off the record.
Later when the camp comes under attack from a sniper, Potter comments that they need the modern day cavalry - a tank. But where can they get one? Hawkeye has the answer and places a call to Griswald. At first Griswald says he is busy but when Hawkeye says his "private medical records" are being endangered and may have to be placed among the official records for safekeeping, Griswald hurriedly agrees to send a tank. At first, Griswald agrees to allow the tank to be kept for a day or two, but then Hawkeye replies that his "private medical records" have been lost. Griswold then agrees to let Potter have the tank for a full week.
