About Dolan[]
After Corporal Eddie Hastings dies, Klinger tells the MASH doctors that among his belongings is a stash of eight thousand dollars in hard U.S. currency. Potter suggests that the only way a soldier could amass that amount of money was under the table. Hawkeye doesn't believe it because "that kid was so clean, he squeaked". Winchester suggests that they ask soldiers from Eddie's unit among the patients at the MASH.
Hawkeye and B.J. approach Corporals Dolan and Vitello and tell them the news that Eddie didn't make it. Dolan and Vitello are not sad to hear it. "Who got him? Their side or ours?" asks Dolan. It turns out Dolan and Vitello have known Eddie since basic training. Vitello says Eddie ran many rackets, crooked gambling, black market and loan sharking at 100% interest. He even employed Korean thugs to "rearrange" the kneecaps of people who didn't pay him back. "That crud was the world's biggest thief," says Dolan, "He'd steal his own mother's shoes if he thought he could make a buck on 'em."
Hawkeye can't believe it because he looks straight off a "Norman Rockwell cover". According to Dolan and Vitello, Eddie did start out that way during basic training. Then he started hanging out with some bad people in the unit and learned fast. "Next thing you know, he was stealin' everybody blind."
Hawkeye is forced to accept the truth but now he has a problem because he has promised to send Eddie's money to his parents.
Dolan's rank is not listed in the episode end credits but B.J. introduces him to Hawkeye by rank and name.
