About Eddie[]
In the episode "Private Finance", Hawkeye struggles to keep his promise to Eddie, who arrived as one of the wounded, leaves a windfall of cash, $8,873, behind which he wished to be sent to his parents in the States. Turns out that the money that he won was mostly in cash, when the soldiers at the time were paid in military script, that he had won by hustling and swindling his fellow soldiers in his unit, and others at poker, craps and other gambling hustles. When Hawkeye writes a condolence letter to his parents informing them of Eddie's death, explaining the situation of his ill-gotten windfall, and his wish that they receive the money, which Pierce also enclosed in the letter in check form, his parents, who are devout Born-again Christians, returned the money, explaining that the money they received came from "an Eddie they (we) didn't know", and that they wished to remember their son the way he was before he joined the Army. So, with help from Colonel Potter, and Father Mulcahy, the 4077th, in making sure the money went to a more honorable use than how it was attained by Hastings.
