James Canning (born July 2, 1946) made two appearances on the CBS-TV series M*A*S*H, first as Corporal Marsh in the Season 5 episode titled "Exorcism" and then as Captain Simmons, a brash young surgeon who lectures the 4077th medical staff, in the Season 7 episode 'titled "The Young and The Restless". James, a Chicago, IL, native, has made numerous guest appearances in such popular TV shows as Family, the 1970s CBS Saturday morning series Isis, and the 1980s ABC series Hardcastle & McCormick. James is best known for his roles in the films The Fog (1980), The Boys in Company C (1978) and Elvis (1979).
He has not acted in a Hollywood film or TV project since his appearance on NBC-TV's Law & Order in 1991.
