Lieutenant Sheila Anderson was a nurse who made a single appearance in the Season 2 episode of the M*A*S*H TV series titled "Carry On, Hawkeye". The part was played by actress Lynette Mettey (credited as Lynnette Mettey) who also played Lieutenant Nancy Griffin in three Season 1 episodes.
About Lieutenant Sheila Anderson[]
Probably because viewers are used to seeing Lynette Mettey as Nancy Griffin in Season 1, the script goes to great lengths to establish Sheila Anderson as a new character. At the beginning of "Carry On, Hawkeye" she is on Post-Op duty when she meets Hawkeye visiting Trapper who is down with the flu. She introduces herself with her full name and rank. "You look new," Hawkeye says. "Only one owner," she replies. Hawkeye leaves some instructions for Trapper's care and adds, "If he makes a grab at you, let him. He needs the exercise."
There is a flu epidemic in the camp and one by one the medical personnel are falling sick. Henry is next to go and only Hawkeye and Frank are left. Then later, while Sheila is assisting Frank in the O.R., he begins to behave erratically. He asks Sheila for a wipe but she informs him that she has just done so. Frank is about to tell her not to argue with him but collapses in mid-sentence. Hawkeye sends Margaret to assist Sheila in closing Frank's patient.
Hawkeye is the only remaining surgeon and Sheila is one of the few nurses left but wounded continue to arrive. Sheila handles Post-Op. In the O.R. Hawkeye also teams her up with Father Mulcahy, and Margaret with Nurse Wilson. Hawkeye would go from patient to patient doing the preliminary steps but leaving most of the work to the teams which are forced to do things they have never done before. Sheila proves to be steady, calm and reliable. When Hawkeye asks Sheila if she can close the patient by herself or if she prefers him to start the process, she replies, "I can do it." Later Father Mulcahy asks if they did all right. "All right? I'm putting you in for the Distinguished Cross cross," Hawkeye replies. The crisis is soon over but then Hawkeye also succumbs to the flu.
