About Spears and his standoff with Private Gillis[]
When an AWOL soldier named Private Nick Gillis (Cyril O'Reilly) wanders into the Mess Tent and sits next to Hawkeye and B.J., He, upset, begins to tell them about his wife back in the states, about someone who wrote him that she has got a baby - problem being, is that Gillis has been in Korea for over a year. Gillis, upon the surgeons' suggestions, talks to Father Mulcahy. The next day, he attends the Father's Sunday service in the Mess Tent. Spears pops up, steps in with MPs in tow, demanding that Gillis come back to the unit with him. Gillis, who adamantly refuses, claims he has a right to Sanctuary, since he is, in effect, inside a church.
When Father Mulcahy agrees with Gillis' point of view, and grants him Sanctuary.
He and Lt. Spears, upon Colonel Potter's suggestion, calls the Judge Advocate General. When the JAG rules against Mulcahy. But Mulcahy still won't relent, saying he will only follow the advice of Command Chaplain at I Corps. Lt. Spears, who can't believe what he's hearing, insults Mulcahy, after which Potter angrily rebuffs him.
After the 4077th gets the same answer from the Command Chaplain at I Corps, Spears, fed up with Gillis's stance, sends the MPs to take him into custody. After a fierce standoff with Spears and the MPs, Gillis, now panicked, grabs the rifle, and even threatens Mulcahy, who courageously manages to get him to put down the rifle. He does, and collapses into tears in Mulcahy's arms, before getting taken off with Spears.
Later at episode's end, we learn that Gillis has been sent by his unit to Dr. Sidney Freedman, where he's "being treated like a casualty, not a criminal."
