About Private Markham[]
Private Markham is a wounded U.S. soldier who arrives at the 4077th with a shoulder wound. During triage, B.J., who is examining him, thinks the wound is not too bad but minutes later Margaret reports that his pulse is weakening. Markham goes into shock and suffers a cardiac arrest. B.J. calls to Winchester to help. However, just as they begin trying to revive him, the camp compound comes under sniper attack. While the MASH personnel evacuate the patients inside the hospital building, B.J. and Winchester drag Markham under an ambulance to continue trying to resuscitate him, finally succeeding.
After the O.R. session, Winchester discovers a bullet hole in his cap and realizes that, like Markham, he also has had a near brush with death, only, Markham's is the more remarkable because he had been dead for three minutes before being revived.
Winchester becomes obsessed with Markham's experience. He sits by Markham's bed in post-op waiting for him to wake up. When Markham does come round, he pesters him, wanting to know what he felt. Unfortunately Markham doesn't remember feeling anything and is too tired to talk much. But Winchester doesn't give up until B.J. tells him to leave Markham alone.
Disappointed, Winchester later hijacks an ambulance and drives up to a battalion aid station to continue seeking answers.
