About Private Scala[]
In the episode Trick or Treatment, Hawkeye, after successfully operating on the wounded Scala has to try to console and persuade him to finally eat after several days in Post Op. Scala has been starving himself out of guilt and grief over the tragic incident when his unit came under heavy attack while his unit was serving chow; he suffers deep grief over going back to the platoon chow line, and then witnessing his unit get bombarded by enemy mortar fire, where most of his platoon, and all of his buddies, were killed.
When Scala turns over a tray with a piece of Pumpkin Pie on it that Hawkeye brings to him in an attempt to get him to finally eat something, he goes on to explain that the Lieutenant of his unit had just given praise to the men for their courage in fighting victoriously in recent battles, and when they had chow, he describes to Hawkeye: "I went back for seconds, and when I came back, all of my buddies were dead, every single one of them..and I'd be dead too, if I hadn't been such a pig!"
Apparently suffering from post-traumatic stress from his frightful experience at the front, Hawkeye, after talking with the teary-eyed and grieving Scala, suggests that he talk to Dr. Sidney Freedman, which is probably who Scala wound up seeing, although it is not mentioned again, nor is any possible future consultation with Sidney ever explored in this or any future episode.
