About SGT Kimble[]
Kimble,a retiring 30 year man who's the Motor Pool Sergeant, asks Hawkeye and BJ for a special favor. He is taking a lot of stuff home to open a restaurant (Kimble's Korean Kafe) and he wants the doctors to sign a form stating he has an inner ear disorder so he can return to the U.S. by ship. Problem is, that Kimble needs three surgeon signatures to have his form approved; when he asks about Col. Potter, they tell him that the Col. would never go for it, that he's "hopelessly honest", so they are left to try to persuade Frank, who has already said that he wouldn't sign it!
The camp's microscope has been stolen, so BJ pays Kimble, who's not only the camp Motor Pool sergeant, but also a master horse-trader, a visit. He offers Kimble a deal: guaranteed passage home by ship if he can get them a new microscope. Kimble is irate, admitting he went to great lengths to steal the one they had (!) But since BJ has him by the "Eustachian tubes", which he looked up in a medical book to find a palatable malady to use as an excuse to get the early medical discharge via ship instead of chopper, he agrees to the deal. Hawkeye and BJ approach Frank to sign Kimble's discharge form, but he refuses to falsify information, even if it means getting a new microscope.
Frank and Margaret admire a new tank borrowed by the 4077th from a Colonel Griswald, a tank commander, which Col. Potter suggested would be good in use to scare off recent sniper fire the camp has been experiencing. Frank brags he took a week's worth of tank training at Fort Benning, GA, and was told he had "the same killer instincts as General Patton". When Frank takes the tank for a little joyride to impress Hotlips, he turns out to be as good a tank driver as surgeon, for he destroys the shower tent, the Swamp, as well as Colonel Potter's jeep! After finally stopping the tank, Frank emerges and gets applause from the rest of the camp, and then promptly pelted by garbage from the angry mob!
When Potter demands an explanation from a dazed Frank, Hawkeye and BJ cover for him, then use this as blackmail to get their third signature for Kimble's discharge.
